After completing the registration formalities at Machame National Park gate (5,400 ft), we set out on our trek. The journey begins by traversing a picturesque and lush forest, surrounded by natural beauty. Along the way, we will enjoy a delightful picnic lunch amidst the breathtaking scenery. Our destination for the day is Machame Camp (9,800 ft), where we will set up camp for the night.

Day 2: Into the Moorland Zone, Machame Camp to Shira Camp

On this day, we leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone characterized by giant heather. The trail steadily ascends through rocky hills, offering wide views of the stunning Shira Plateau (11,000 ft). Our campsite for the night is near Shira Hut (12,600 ft), where we will be treated to unforgettable vistas of Mt. Meru as it majestically hovers among the clouds.

Today's trek involves a sustained morning ascent, providing us with panoramic views until we reach our lunch spot near Lava Tower (15,150 ft). From there, the trail descends to the bottom of the Barranco Valley (12,800 ft). Our camp for the night is at the spectacular Barranco Camp, sheltered by towering cliffs and offering extensive views of the plains below.

We begin with a steep trek up the Barranco Wall, a thrilling segment of the trek. As we ascend, we're treated to breathtaking vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered areas. Our camp for the night is Karanga Camp (13,100 ft), the last water point before the summit.

Day 5: Preparing for the Final Ascent, Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that lead us to Barafu Hut (14,800 ft) for lunch. Afterward, there's a short acclimatization trek to the plateau at the bottom of the southeast valley (15,700 ft). The rest of the day is spent resting and preparing for the early morning final ascent to the summit.

Day 6: Summit Day! Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp

The big day is here! We start our ascent around 1 a.m. with headlamps to reach the crater rim by sunrise. The trek is steep over loose volcanic scree, but well-graded zigzags make it manageable. After about five or six hours of a slow but steady pace, we arrive at Stella Point (18,800 ft). We rest briefly to witness the sunrise over Mawenzi. For those feeling strong, there's an optional two-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), passing close to spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that adorn most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after refreshing, we continue to descend to our final campsite, Millennium Camp (12,500 ft).

The day starts with a sustained descent on a well-constructed path through a vibrant tropical forest teeming with birdsong and lush undergrowth, showcasing considerable botanical diversity. The trail winds down to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Mweka (5,400 ft). From there, we continue through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village, where a transfer will take us back to our lodging in Moshi.
