Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi to Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Day 1 - Moshi to Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, covering approximately 45 km in about 1 hour. Upon arrival, you'll complete the park registration, meet your experienced mountain crew, and receive a short briefing before setting off on your trek. Today's hike follows a well-maintained trail through Kilimanjaro's lush rainforest, where towering trees, colorful wildflowers, and the sounds of tropical birds create a peaceful atmosphere. The trek covers approximately 11 km and takes around 5–7 hours to reach Machame Camp (3,000 m). Since this is your first day at altitude, you'll enjoy a relaxed evening with a freshly prepared meal and plenty of time to rest, allowing your body to begin its natural acclimatization before continuing higher up the mountain.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After a hearty breakfast, you'll leave the rainforest behind and enter the open moorland, where the landscape changes dramatically with giant heather, volcanic rocks, and expansive mountain views. As you gain elevation, you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramas of Kibo Peak and the Shira Plateau, making this one of the most scenic sections of the trek. Today's hike covers approximately 5 km and takes around 4–6 hours to reach Shira Camp (3,840 m). The gradual ascent gives your body time to adjust to the higher altitude, making it an important acclimatization day. After settling into camp, you can relax, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and watch the sun set over one of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular landscapes.

Today is a key acclimatization day and one of the most rewarding parts of the Machame Route. After leaving Shira Camp, you'll trek across the vast alpine desert toward Lava Tower (4,630 m), a striking volcanic rock formation where you'll stop for lunch and experience the effects of the higher altitude. From Lava Tower, you'll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m), following the proven "climb high, sleep low" strategy that helps your body adapt before the summit push. The day's trek covers approximately 10 km and takes around 6–8 hours. Surrounded by towering cliffs and spectacular mountain scenery, Barranco Camp offers a peaceful setting to rest and prepare for the adventures ahead.

Day 4: Kilimanjaro Climb from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you'll tackle the famous Barranco Wall, an exciting and rewarding climb that offers incredible views over the valleys below. Despite its steep appearance, the ascent is non-technical and guided carefully by your experienced mountain team. Reaching the top is a memorable achievement and one of the highlights of the Machame Route. From there, you'll continue across rolling alpine terrain with a few short ascents and descents before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Today's trek covers approximately 5 km and takes around 4–5 hours, allowing for a shorter hiking day that supports proper acclimatization. You'll have the afternoon to rest, rehydrate, and enjoy the mountain surroundings as you prepare for the final ascent to Barafu Camp the following day.

Today's trek takes you higher into Kilimanjaro's alpine desert as you make your way to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic, with rocky trails and breathtaking views of Kibo Peak reminding you that the summit is now within reach. The hike covers approximately 4 km and takes around 3–5 hours, making it a relatively short but important day. Arriving at Barafu Camp early gives you plenty of time to rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare your equipment before getting a few hours of sleep. This extra recovery time plays a valuable role in acclimatization and helps you conserve energy for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Your summit adventure begins just after midnight as you leave Barafu Camp and climb steadily under the stars toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Although this is the most demanding day of the trek, every step brings you closer to the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable reward, with breathtaking views stretching across glaciers and the plains below. After celebrating your achievement and taking memorable photos, you'll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for your final night on the mountain. Today's journey covers approximately 17 km and takes around 11–15 hours. The long descent to a lower altitude helps your body recover after a successful summit while allowing you to reflect on an extraordinary accomplishment.

Wake up to your final morning on Mount Kilimanjaro and enjoy breakfast before beginning the descent through the beautiful rainforest. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation, towering trees, and the sounds of birds, providing a relaxing end to your mountain adventure. It's the perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey and celebrate your achievement.
The descent covers approximately 10 km and takes around 3–5 hours to reach Mweka Gate, where you'll complete the exit formalities and receive your summit certificate. After saying goodbye to your mountain crew, you'll enjoy a comfortable drive of approximately 25 km (about 45 minutes) back to Moshi, where a warm shower, comfortable accommodation, and a well-earned celebration await.
