7 Days KILIMANJARO CLIMBING CHALLENGE VIA UMBWE ROUTE

The Umbwe route, often dubbed the trail less traveled on Mount Kilimanjaro, is a daring ascent. Its steep and direct path is known for its formidable challenge, making it the most strenuous route. This climb, characterized by a swift ascent, lacks the gradual altitude acclimatization essential for safe climbing. With minimal traffic, it promises solitude but demands extreme determination.

Day 1  :  Starting Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,800 m/5,905 ft) to Umbwe Camp (2,800 m/9,190 ft)

Your adventure begins early as the day breaks with a briefing, followed by a hearty breakfast. Afterward, embark on a one-hour drive from Moshi to the picturesque Umbwe Village (1,490 m/4,890 ft). Here, your guides and porters will efficiently organize your equipment and supplies while providing you with a packed lunch. Your ascent kicks off at the small Umbwe Gate just above the village. Initially, you'll follow a gently winding vehicle track for an hour until you reach a signboard signaling the start of the steep Umbwe trail. This marks the end of your introduction, and the real climb begins. Umbwe Camp, nestled within the forest and with nearby caves, will be your haven for the night. Here, you'll be treated to a warm, nourishing meal.

Day 2  :  Climbing from Umbwe Camp (2,800 m/9,190 ft) to Barranco Camp (3,900 m/12,800 ft)

Day two commences early with a steaming cup of tea or coffee. After breakfast, you'll embark on a steep climb through the forest, gradually transitioning into glades with thinning trees. As you ascend, you'll notice the landscape evolving with the appearance of Giant Erica, Heather, and drier air. Following lunch, you'll venture into a zone guarded by towering groundsels, a unique Kilimanjaro treasure known as Scenario Kilimanjaro. With the prospect of Uhuru Peak looming overhead, this day offers breathtaking scenery.

Following breakfast, continue your ascent, heading up a steep ridge towards the imposing Barranco Wall. Surprisingly, the climb up the wall is easier than it appears. Upon reaching just below the Heim Glacier, you'll be greeted by the stunning beauty of Kilimanjaro, with Kibo's glaciers soaring above. Descend into the lush Karanga Valley, where the Karanga Valley campsite awaits. From here, you'll have a clear view of the jagged peaks of Mawenzi to the east. After a hot lunch at the camp, the afternoon is yours to rest or explore. This shorter day is essential for acclimatization as you prepare for your summit push

    Day 5  :  Karanga Camp (4,200 m/13,780 ft) to Barafu Camp (4,550 m/14,930 ft)

In the morning, head east over intervening ridges and valleys to join the Mweka Route, which will be your descent path. Continue up the ridge through a sparsely vegetated landscape for about an hour until you reach Barafu Hut, where you'll enjoy a hot lunch. Barafu Camp, despite its name meaning "ice" in Swahili, lacks a water source. The iconic snows of Kilimanjaro are high above Barafu Camp, near the summit. Your tent will be pitched on a narrow, stony ridge exposed to the wind, so take time to familiarize yourself with the terrain before nightfall to ensure safety. Prepare your gear and warm clothing for the upcoming summit climb, and stay hydrated. After an early dinner, get some precious hours of sleep.

Day 6  :  Summit Day! Barafu Camp (4,550 m/14,930 ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft) to Mweka Camp

Your summit day begins around 11:30 PM At Stella Point (5,685 m/18,650 ft), pause for a short rest and witness a breathtaking sunrise. Here, you merge with the top part of the Marangu Route Depending on the season and recent weather, you may encounter snow as you continue along the rim towards Uhuru Peak. Upon reaching the summit, revel in your remarkable accomplishment, knowing that this day will be etched in your memory forever. After a three-hour descent from the summit back to Barafu Camp, take a well-deserved but brief rest. Collect your gear and descend on a rocky, scree-covered path through the moorland, eventually reaching the forested Mweka Camp (3,100 m/10,170 ft).

Enjoy a well-deserved breakfast, followed by a short and scenic three-hour hike back to the park gate. Hold off on tipping your porters until you and all your gear have safely reached the gate. However, remember to show appreciation to your staff at the gate. At Mweka Gate, sign your name and provide details in a register. Successful climbers receive summit certificates; green certificates for those who reached Stella Point and gold certificates for those who reached Uhuru Peak.
