7 Days KILIMANJARO HIKING VIA UMBWE ROUTE ADVENTURE

The Umbwe route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a challenging, direct ascent with minimal acclimatization time. It's recommended for experienced hikers with an optional extra day in the Karanga Valley, sharing the descent trail with the Mweka Route. Success rates are lower due to its difficulty.

Your adventure begins as you depart from Moshi at 8 am, heading towards Umbwe Gate. This is where you'll rendezvous with our dedicated team of porters, guides, and skilled cooks, all ready to accompany you on this exhilarating seven-day hike to Uhuru Peak, the majestic rooftop of Africa. Upon arrival at Umbwe Gate, a brief pause allows us to complete the necessary registration procedures while our porters and guides make their final preparations. Your very first destination on this extraordinary journey is the Cave Bivouac Camp, a challenging yet rewarding hike approximately spanning 6 hours from the gate. Be prepared for steep terrain that can sometimes be a tad slippery. Day 2  :  LEAVING UMBWE CAVE CAMP TO BARRANCO CAMP

Today's journey takes you from the Umbwe Cave Camp, situated at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), to the picturesque Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters (12,960 feet). This leg of the trek involves a total elevation gain of 1,100 meters (3,610 feet) and typically spans 5 to 7 hours. The initial section of the trail continues to trace the ridge, offering sweeping vistas along the way. As you depart from the forest, you'll traverse open moorlands until reaching the breathtaking Barranco Camp. Widely regarded as the most scenic campsite along the Umbwe Trail, Barranco Camp boasts a backdrop of towering senecios and lobelias. The camp's location in a valley means the sunrise graces it a bit later than the other camps, promising a unique spectacle.

The day's adventure commences with a challenging 1.5-hour scramble up the imposing Barranco Wall, a segment that may require you to use your hands to aid your ascent. Today, you'll gain an additional 400 meters (1,320 feet) in elevation, covering a distance of 6 kilometers over 3 to 5 hours. Following a hearty breakfast, start on the hike to Barafu Camp. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of several of Kibo's glaciers, as well as the junction where the descent route, Mweka, intersects with the Machame trail. On this leg, you'll also pass by the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. While the trail to Barafu winds through an alpine desert with minimal vegetation, the camp itself offers mesmerizing vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After enjoying dinner, it's essential to rest up because you'll be waking up before midnight for the ultimate summit push.

Day 6  :  THE SUMMIT ASCENT AND DESCENT TO MWEKA CAMP

The moment you've been waiting for has arrived. At around midnight, embark on the epic final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Armed with headlamps to illuminate your path, you'll navigate the mountain's challenging terrain for the next six hours. The stretch from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a more gradual incline and, comparatively, not excessively difficult in terms of the hike itself. However, the high altitude introduces its own set of challenges, making this portion both lengthy and physically demanding. The crater rim hike typically takes about an hour to complete. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, don't forget to capture the moment with photos of your guide and fellow trekkers before commencing your descent to Mweka Camp. As you descend from Uhuru, savor the stunning views of the mountain, the crater, the rolling clouds, and the glistening glaciers.

Exercise caution during the descent, as the trail can be slippery at times. At the lower station of Mweka Gate, our vehicles will be waiting to transport you back to Moshi. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you'll sign your name and details in a register book.
